World Health Organization Faces Major Staff Cuts After United States Financial Pullout
This international public health organization has announced plans to cut its staff by nearly a fourth – totaling over two thousand jobs – by the middle of 2026.
Funding Shortfall Triggers Major Reorganization
The decision follows after the US, previously the organization's largest donor, withdrew financial support earlier this period.
Washington had been responsible for approximately 18% of the organization's total budget, creating a substantial financial shortfall.
Expected Workforce Reductions
Based on organizational projections, the staff is expected to drop from 9,401 positions in early 2025 to approximately 7,030 by June 2026.
The decrease of 2,371 posts includes staff reductions, retirements, and regular departures.
"This year has been one of the toughest in our history, as we undertook a challenging but necessary process of prioritization and realignment," commented the agency's leader.
Financial Shortfall Persists
The Switzerland-headquartered body currently confronts a budget shortfall of 1.06 billion dollars for the upcoming biennium, amounting to almost a fourth of its required budget.
This figure represents an reduction from a previous estimated gap of 1.7 billion dollars reported in May.
Excluded Finances
The financial calculations do not include an additional 1.1 billion dollars in expected funding from ongoing discussions with various contributors.
The representative for the organization noted that the current unsecured portion of the budget is actually lower than in earlier periods, crediting this to several reasons:
- Reduced total budget size
- Initiation of a new donor outreach effort
- Higher in participating countries' mandatory fees
This restructuring initiative is currently nearing its completion, paving the way for the agency to move forward with a reshaped structure.
