Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such treatments must be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
