Tuchel Questions Wembley Crowd Support Following Dominant Wales Victory.
Thomas Tuchel voiced his regret that the Three Lions team did not get stronger backing from the home fans during their commanding friendly win against Wales on Thursday night.
Tuchel was happy to see his team continue their good form, with finishes from Rogers, Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the first 20 minutes effectively ending the contest. However, he was not content with the atmosphere at the iconic venue.
“With one and a half sessions to prepare against a well-trained team and we excelled,” Tuchel stated. “It could have been five goals ahead at the break. We missed the additional goals. It was quiet. We didn’t get any energy from the crowd. Our team gave their all to win.”
“How much more can you give in 20 minutes? We didn’t let them get away. If you hear just the Welsh supporters for half an hour, it’s sad because the team earned better encouragement today.”
“I support this statement. There’s nothing more than leading 3-0 in a rivalry match. I would have wished for a little more backing in moments where it gets difficult.”
“In the second half, to support us, there was excessive backing for the opposition. It could have helped us to refocus, but it is what it is and that is it.”
Squad Decisions Vindicated by Display
Apart from potentially starting a dispute among supporters, the manager also created controversy by omitting Bellingham and Foden from his squad. However the move was validated by Morgan Rogers excelling in the No 10 position and getting his first international goal.
“He plays his game,” the head coach explained. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is vying for his place.”
Wales Manager Hopes for Lessons from Loss
The Wales manager expressed hope that Wales, who host Belgium in a important qualifying match on Monday, learn from their awful first-half display.
“That’s the reason I wanted this friendly,” the manager commented. “I wanted to assess our current level. Where do we want to go? Who do we want to be? Today gives me motivation.”
Fitness Worry for Striker
Watkins was taken off at the break after hitting a goalpost and is a concern when England face Latvia in the Latvian capital in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.
