The Developer's Challenged Shooter Marathon Is Gaining Momentum
Marathon, Bungie's much-anticipated game, has reared its head again with the news of a closed technical test set to take place soon.
A Challenging Path to Launch
Initially revealed during the 2023 gaming showcase, Marathon has undergone a tumultuous development cycle. In October 2024, the developer stated it was aiming to start Alpha tests during the coming year. A period of silence followed, until the project was re-revealed in spring with a Sept. 23 launch date. However, following initial testing resulted in negative feedback, Bungie revealed during summer that it was postponing the game's launch.
Steering Clear of Controversy
Though Marathon has already seen its portion of issues, Bungie appears determined to make certain their project avoids Concord's fate. Currently, it appears the game's development is finally getting back on track, as they just revealed that it has run "several closed playtests to collect player input on the game" since this past summer. The developer is opening the doors a bit wider, allowing more players to catch a glimpse of the experience via an forthcoming "closed technical test."
Exclusive Testing Information
Given the fact that it's a closed technical test, it's understandably more exclusive than, for example, an open beta. To gain access in the technical test — which runs from Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. PDT to October 28th — players must satisfy the listed requirements:
- Apply via the official website
- Reside in supported regions
- Have access to a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X or S, or Windows PC (minimum PC specs include an Intel Core i5-6600 processor, supported graphics card, and sufficient memory)
- Participate in the official Discord server
- Complete confidentiality agreement via the online community
How to Apply
Registration is currently available, and to be considered for the technical test, applicants must complete registration by Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. PDT. Players on Windows PC can also submit their application via Steam starting on Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. PDT, with Steam applications due by October 26th. Bungie will notify players who qualify and provide details of the following procedures.
"This represents a crucial milestone for us as we test our improvements since the game's Alpha, including three maps, five runner shells, proximity communication, re-tuned combat pacing, solo queue, enhanced narrative elements, and more," Bungie stated. "However, the Technical Test build is a work in progress and will only include a portion of what's intended for the game's full release, concentrating on the initial gameplay moments."
Further Details
Additional details about the technical test and the game itself can be located on Marathon's support section. But for individuals who aren't selected for the trial (or cannot participate), there's positive developments: The developer says a public update on the project's status is the following item on the agenda once the trial concludes.
"There will be a comprehensive report on the game's progress in the near future after the private testing phase!" Bungie shared.
