Old Fishing Nets from French Coast Evolve into Vital Shield To Counter Russian Drones in Ukraine

On the harbor docks of the Breton shoreline, accumulations of old nets now represent a familiar view.

The lifespan of ocean trawling nets usually lasts between 12-24 months, after which they become worn and beyond repair.

Presently, this marine-grade mesh, once used to trawl ocean species from the sea bed, is being repurposed for another type of catch: enemy unmanned aircraft.

Humanitarian Effort Transforms Marine Waste

A French humanitarian organization has sent two consignments of nets extending 280 kilometers to the conflict zone to protect soldiers and civilians along the combat zone where conflict intensifies.

Russia employs inexpensive unmanned aircraft fitted with combat payloads, directing them by remote control for distances of up to 25km.

"Since the conflict began, the war has transformed. Initially we barely imagined about drones, but now it's a drone war," explained a aid distribution manager.

Tactical Use of Trawling Gear

Ukrainian forces use the nets to construct passageways where drone propellers become ensnared. This approach has been likened to spiders catching flies in a web.

"The Ukrainians have told us they cannot use generic mesh material. They have been sent quite a few that are of no use," the organizer added.

"Our specific shipments are made of equine fiber and used for ocean trawling to catch monkfish which are exceptionally strong and hit the nets with a power comparable to that of a drone."

Expanding Uses

At first deployed by healthcare workers defending field hospitals near the battle area, the nets are now employed on thoroughfares, crossings, the healthcare center gateways.

"It's incredible that this elementary solution works so well," commented the charity president.

"There is no shortage of marine gear in this region. It presents a challenge to know where to send them as several companies that recycle them have ceased operations."

Logistical Challenges

The humanitarian group was formed after community members contacted the founders requesting assistance with basic necessities and treatment resources for communities back home.

A team of helpers have delivered two lorry consignments of aid 1,430 miles to the Polish-Ukrainian frontier.

"Upon discovering that Ukraine needed nets, the marine industry acted promptly," declared the charity director.

Aerial Combat Evolution

The enemy utilizes FPV unmanned aircraft similar to those on the commercial market that can be guided by remote radio control and are then packed with combat charges.

Hostile controllers with instant visual data direct them to their objectives. In various locations, military personnel report that no movement occurs without capturing the focus of swarms of "destructive" kamikaze drones.

Defensive Methods

The fishing nets are stretched between poles to form protective passageways or used to cover defensive positions and vehicles.

Ukrainian drones are also outfitted with fragments of material to deploy against opposition vehicles.

In recent periods, Ukraine was facing more than numerous aerial vehicles each twenty-four hour period.

International Assistance

Multiple tons of discarded marine material have also been contributed by marine workers in Scandinavian nations.

An ex-marine industry representative commented that regional fishermen are particularly willing to support the defense cause.

"They experience satisfaction to know their used material is going to assist in protection," he told reporters.

Financial Constraints

The organization currently lacks the monetary means to dispatch additional materials this year and discussions were underway for Ukraine to dispatch vehicles to pick up the nets.

"We shall assist obtain the gear and load them but we lack the budget to continue managing shipments ourselves," stated the charity spokesperson.

Practical Restrictions

A defense forces representative stated that protective mesh corridors were being installed across the conflict area, about 75 percent of which is now described as held and governed by opposition military.

She commented that opposition vehicle controllers were continuously developing ways to breach the netting.

"Protective material cannot serve as a panacea. They are just a single component of defense from drones," she clarified.

A former produce merchant expressed that the individuals he encountered were touched by the assistance from French fishing towns.

"The fact that those in the coastal economy the distant part of the continent are providing material to support their defensive measures has brought a few tears to their eyes," he concluded.
