The speculation around The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely building a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be completed in a variety of manners, frequently in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
