Boston Mayor Mayor Wu Counters Trump's Warning to Move World Cup Games from City

Boston's mayor, Mayor Wu, implied that the municipality was ready for a confrontation with President Donald Trump concerning his claim that he could instruct FIFA to relocate World Cup matches from the stadium in Foxborough, located 22 miles south-west of the city.

Wu appeared on a local podcast recently to answer criticism from the Trump administration, which had labeled her as "far-left." Trump had threatened that he would contact FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "improve its situation."

Much of it is secured by contract so that no single person, even the president, can undo it.

She continued, "We live in a time where for drama, for power, to test limits ... repeated warnings ... are issued at people and cities who stand their ground and comply or be obedient to a divisive plan."

Mayor Wu also remarked, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be in a conversation that is targeting Boston's values." She concluded by emphasizing her commitment for the Boston, saying, "Ten toes down for Boston."

The President's Comments and FIFA Involvement

Earlier this week, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was seen with Trump at the international summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. Infantino has also visited the White House and given World Cup and club championship trophies to the president as presents.

On Tuesday, Trump was asked about recent disturbances in South Boston that involved a police vehicle being burned. Trump replied, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni – the head of the organization, who's great."

Trump added, "I would say: 'We should relocate the games' and they would do that. He might not prefer it. But he would do it without hesitation." The president also directly criticized Wu, saying, "Boston's mayor is not good ... she's radical left, and they're taking over parts of Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"

Past Threats and 2026 World Cup Details

President Trump has previously suggested that he would take the similar discussion with the FIFA president about moving games from Seattle and San Francisco, which are among the 16 host cities across North America.

The United States is co-hosting the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is planned to be held from June 11 to July 19 next summer.
