At least thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
