"When are you chatting with the Haim sisters?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: The sender also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Several high-profile admirers have openly petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy nominees.

In the tradition of the most iconic bands, they're a inseparable gang. Their visuals often depict them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members told us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the biggest honour. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate others to form a group."

Grammy Recognition

The trio have called into a break, where they're resting up after an major tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade is deeply felt by the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record was born from a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that strange in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes follow breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That newfound toughness called for a fresh approach – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The band's candor inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal tales.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an global fan base.

But the sister act will forever be their top commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "There is nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
